Local fitness community shares inspiring member stories — and the surprising reasons they train that have nothing to do with the number on the scales. For many, the health and fitness journey begins with a moment on the scales — staring down at a number that can influence how you feel about yourself for the whole day. While that might be the starting point, it doesn’t have to be the reason you keep going. The idea for writing about this came from a conversation with one of our members at Potential Personal Training here in Lindfield. She had spent much of her life trying every diet out there, feeling hyper-focused on her weight but also stuck — convinced that number would never change. Then she took the leap, joined PPT and Six years later, she’s still training with us. She told us: “It’s the first thing I’ve ever been able to stick to. The biggest change wasn’t just her physical progress — it was letting go of the belief that the scales could define her worth.” I remember this conversation, about how uplifting it was, realising her self-worth didn’t have to be wrapped up in a number on the scales. Instead of asking ‘How much do I weigh?’ she began asking ‘What can my body do?’. She learned to feel proud of her strength, energy, and confidence. And here’s the best part: once she stopped obsessing over the scales, making progress became easier — and she enjoyed the process so much more! Inspired by her story, we asked other members to share their real reasons for training.

“I train to show my daughter how important it is to be strong.” – Emma
“I train to stay fit after multiple operations — so I can move with ease and enjoy time with friends here.” – Jill
“I train for my self-confidence. I wore a bikini for the first time in nine years and shorts to the gym for the first time ever!” – Hannah
“I train for my mental health. It’s my time for me, and it makes me feel amazing.” – Charlotte
“I train for so many reasons — more energy, more happiness, more strength. If I haven’t trained, I feel the opposite.” – James
