At Mathilda Rose we work by appointment to ensure that we are available to give you our undivided attention and one to one service. Our team of expert stylists are here to help you find your perfect wedding dress. We recommend that our brides bring up to three guests with them to their appointment. Fifteen years of Mathilda Rose

By Nicola O’Rourke For 15 years, Mathilda Rose has been part of Lindfield’s beautiful High Street, its windows filled with wedding dresses, flowers, Christmas installations and, on occasion, rather more ambitious creations. Behind those windows have been thousands of gowns, countless happy tears and fifteen years of helping brides find the one. As someone born and bred in Lindfield, opening my own boutique here felt particularly special. After fifteen years working in fashion buying for retailers including M&S, I knew exactly what I wanted Mathilda Rose to be: somewhere beautiful but welcoming, special without being intimidating and, above all, somewhere a bride could relax, be herself and genuinely enjoy finding the dress she would marry in.

Fifteen years later, so much has changed, but that hasn’t. My three daughters were little when Mathilda Rose opened. Brontë, my youngest, was only two, and I still remember her coming into the boutique aged about four and asking ‘Mummy, I love your shop, but why are all the dresses white?’! Next year she turns 18, and my daughters now occasionally work alongside me. Somehow, that feels like the perfect measure of just how much life has happened during those fifteen years. Our windows have become part of that story too. I hadn’t realised how much they had become part of other people’s memories until a bride recently told us she had walked past Mathilda Rose on her way to school as a little girl, dreaming that one day she might become a Mathilda Rose bride. After saying yes to her dress, she sent me a message: “My 10-year-old self would not believe my dream of buying a Mathilda Rose dress has come true.” After fifteen years, messages like that mean everything.

There have been wonderful milestones along the way. In 2019, Mathilda Rose was named Best Bridal Retailer for London and the South East at The Wedding Industry Awards. Then came 2020. Covid brought weddings and our high streets to a standstill, but we survived. Our doors reopened, our brides came back and weddings returned. Today, Maggie Sottero, one of the world’s leading bridal designers, remains our flagship collection. We’ve worked with Maggie since the day we opened and are now proud to be a Maggie Sottero Double Gold Premium Retailer; this relationship has grown alongside Mathilda Rose for 15 years.

I’m equally proud of our in-house alterations service, increasingly rare in bridal boutiques. Dao, our wonderfully talented seamstress, has been with Mathilda Rose since the beginning, and Becky joined us almost ten years ago. Together, we look after our brides right through to those final, all-important tweaks before their gown is hand-pressed and aisle-ready. But after fifteen years, I’ve realised the heart of Mathilda Rose isn’t really the dresses, designers or awards.

It’s the people. It’s the mum trying not to cry when her daughter suddenly looks like a bride. The bride who arrives convinced she won’t find anything she feels beautiful in and leaves having found the one. The appointments that become treasured family memories, sometimes more precious than we could have realised. The sisters who return years apart and the recommendations passed between friends.

And now, wonderfully, the little girls who once peered through our windows growing up and becoming our brides. Perhaps that’s part of what makes Lindfield so special. Our High Street is filled with wonderful independent businesses and beautiful shop windows, so brides and their families can make a day of it – coffee or lunch, a little shopping, perhaps a glass of champagne – in a village we feel incredibly lucky to call home.

As we celebrate our 15th birthday, I’m enormously grateful to Dao and Becky, our designers, every bride and family who has trusted us, and to Lindfield for supporting our little independent boutique for all these years. Here’s to the next fifteen and, inevitably, many more window displays!
